Room 111
We have not yet discovered the pension
of Florence from which the breathtakingly beautiful opening scene
of the Merchant and Ivory film, “A Room With A View,” was
filmed. But we have found a room, in fact two, that offers comparable
views of this magical city, and they are both at the Grand Hotel,
which we think is indeed the grandest in Florence. Shown here is
Room 111, a large corner junior suite overlooking the Arno River
with windows on both sides. A day in Florence beginning
with breakfast on one of the two balconies of this suite is a treat
never to be surpassed or forgotten. And a similar but somewhat
smaller “room with a view” (Room 411) is on
the 4th floor. As for Florence itself, nothing can usefully be
added to what has been said so well by others: It is the quintessence
of the Renaissance, the mother of all great cities. Apart from
its museums, churches, palaces, art and architecture, we think
it has the best shopping in Europe. And it is all at your doorstep
at the Grand Hotel.
