Room 218
The Adlon Hotel, built at the foot
of Unter den Linden (referring to the linden trees that once lined
the street in pre-World War ll Berlin) is, we think, the finest
hotel in Berlin today. Although completed only recently it has
a warm and comfortable “old
world” feel that evokes an earlier era. Indeed, the hotel’s
special combination of new and old--like its very location at the
intersection of modern, bustling West Berlin and the classical
world of the former Prussian capital that lay in the heart of (what
once was) East Berlin-- seems to bridge the gap between the past
and the present in a way that makes one forget that this was once
a divided city.
We recommend Room 218, depicted here, a
large room with three French doors overlooking Unter den Linden
(now under construction of a new subway link but soon to be restored
and lined once again with linden trees). From the balcony of the
room you can see Berlin’s famed Brandenburg gate and the bustling
square in front of it where you can have lunch on a fine day at
the hotel’s outdoor cafe restaurant. |
