Sicily is justly famed for its panoramic scenic vistas, its magnificent
countryside that comes alive with wildflowers in the spring, its
remarkable Greek ruins, its orange and almond groves that perfume
the air with their fragrant blooms and, of course, its storied “mafia” history.
It is not, however, especially noted for the quality of its hotels.
And so we were surprised to discover the San Domenico Palace, a
truly world class hotel standing at the pinnacle of the ancient
town of Taormina on the northern coast of Sicily.
The San Domenico Palace is an oasis of peace and serenity
just steps away from the busy commercialism of this much visited hill town.
Its gardens are lovely and its views of the sea and the snow-capped summit
of Mt. Etna in the distance are breathtaking. And the food, at each of
the hotel’s two restaurants, is simply wonderful.
We recommend room 201, a suite which overlooks the
hotel’s garden and the vista of the hillside and sea below.
